Melbourne is world famous
for The Melbourne Cup which is a horse race run on the first Tuesday
in November of each year. It stops the entire Australian nation. It captures
world interest.
One reason is the huge prize money of about five point four million dollars,
and the first ten horses
receive a cash payout. Another reason for The Cup's fame is fashion. It's an
Australian custom now
throughout Australia, for people to come to Flemington Racetrack in November
to show off their latest
designs in dresses and hats, suits and comic costumes. A lot of fun and heavy
drinking occur that day!
This year, 2006, marked
the huge win by 'Japanese raiders'... the horses named "Delta Blue"
and
"Pop Rock". The first was ridden at Flemington racecourse by a Japanese
jockey while the second,
the horse "Pop Rock" was ridden by the famous Australian jockey, Damien
Oliver. The stayer ridden
by Oliver was catching up fast at the finish and "Delta Blue" only
won by half a head. The jockey was
speechless and great joy flowed in the racing team from Japan.
Other attractions include
The Northern Territory which has many aboriginal sites and communities.
The world's largest rock is 'Uluru' or Ayers Rock which stands out as a red
rock from hundreds of miles away.
It has witnessed aboriginal life for well over forty thousand years. You can
take a fast galloping train
journey through the very interior of Australia, and the luxury train is known
as 'The Ghan.' It's a stayer.
Western Australia is only
sparsely populated and has immense natural resources, such as gold,
iron ore, uranium, oil and natural gas. There are massive mines in the state
and one gold mine
at Kalgoorlie is a must see: The Super Pit. Tourists love the port city of Fremantle
which has two
old prisons and its famous 'capucchino strip' of alfresco dining. There's also
a very old market
and several maritime museums. The shopping in Fremantle reveals unique and artistic
items from a
variety of ethnic origins.
Melbourne,
capital city of the Australian state of Victoria, is known for the Yarra River
meandering through
it, and for being a centre of culture, restaurants and sporting venues. The
Commonwealth Games were
recently held in Melbourne at Rod Laver Arena and there is the Melbourne Cricket
Ground where The Ashes
has traditionally been competed for. The racing fraternity meets at Flemington
Race Course in early November
to celebrate and compete for The Melbourne Cup. Top winners have been Phar Lap
and Makybe Diva which
is the only horse to have won the cup three times in a row. The jockey was Glen
Boss. The horse trainer was...
It was also a second triumph for Makybe Diva's jockey Glen Boss and a training
windfall for Lee Freedman.
To win three times was miraculous.
